ECOTON (Ecological Observation and Wetland Conservations) was established in 1996 as a wetland conservation study group of the Biology Study Program of Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) founded by Prigi Arisandi, M.Si., incorporated as a Non-Governmental Organization in 2000. In 2017, Ecoton transformed into a Foundation that was legally registered with a notarial deed. Ecoton's existence is the result of a sense of concern for environmental problems, especially rivers in Indonesia.
Its vision is “Realizing the sustainability of biodiversity and environmental functions for humans, through river ecosystems and equal and participatory river management”. Through the three pillars of “READ” namely “research, education, and Advocacy”, Ecoton conducts various social movements, community education campaigns which are poured into its programs.
Ecoton is active in exploring scientific studies and research related to pollution in rivers. The foundation is an independently established organization that is active in environmental research and has published many publications to educate the public on the importance of protecting river ecosystems. Ecoton has an ecological laboratory that can support scientific studies on monitoring the quality of aquatic ecosystems.
