Abstract

The use of plastic mulch in agriculture continues to increase to improve efficiency and productivity. However, long-term application may leave plastic residues that degrade into microplastics. This study analyzed the vertical distribution and characteristics of microplastics in agricultural soils in Wringinanom Subdistrict. Sampling sites were selected purposively, and microplastic distribution was analyzed descriptively. Mulched fields showed higher microplastic abundance than non-mulched fields. The presence of microplastics at depths >20 cm indicated vertical migration within the soil profile. Fibers were the dominant form, accounting for 52–87% of detected particles. Most microplastics were 0.05–0.1 mm in size, while 67% were black. Microplastic accumulation may adversely affect agricultural soil quality. Therefore, organic mulch, cover crops, and biodegradable mulch should be considered as more sustainable alternatives.
